How to Tell If Your TV Aerial Needs Replacing

Sign #1: Multiple Channels Missing or Pixelating

If BBC One, BBC Two, and other major channels are breaking up or missing entirely, your aerial signal is weak. If only weak channels drop out (channel 4, 5), it might just need realignment. If strong channels are affected, replacement is likely needed.

Sign #2: Aerial Is Visibly Damaged

Climb a ladder (safely!) and look at your aerial. If you see:

• Bent or broken rods – Replacement needed
• Rust/corrosion – Can sometimes be cleaned and repaired
• Loose connections – Can be fixed (not replacement)
• Missing parts or segments – Replacement needed

Sign #3: Aerial Is Older Than 10-15 Years

TV aerials last 10-15 years in good condition. After that, materials degrade:

• Metal corrodes and connections weaken
• Plastic joints become brittle
• Coaxial cable insulation deteriorates
• Signal efficiency drops gradually

Old doesn't always mean broken: We've seen 20+ year old aerials still performing perfectly. But if it's old AND showing signal problems, replacement usually makes sense.

Sign #4: You've Recently Moved Into a New Build

New build developers often install cheap builder-grade aerials that are:

• • Undersized and poorly positioned
• • Not optimized for your local transmitter
• • Installed by contractors, not specialists
• • Designed to pass inspection, not deliver quality reception

If you're in a new-build and struggling with channels, 95% of the time a proper professional aerial upgrade solves it completely.

Sign #5: Cable Is Damaged or Water-Logged

The coaxial cable connecting your aerial to the TV box is just as important as the aerial itself. If the cable is:

• Exposed or frayed – Water gets in, signal drops
• Crushed or pinched – Signal can't pass through
• Loose connections – Easy fix (don't replace aerial)
• Corroded connectors – Can sometimes be cleaned

Sign #6: One Room Gets Signal, Others Don't

If your living room has perfect TV reception but the bedroom TV is terrible, the problem is usually:

• • Weak cable run – Bedroom is too far from the signal splitter
• • Poor splitter quality – Loses signal as it divides
• • Interference in one room – WiFi, microwave, 4G affecting one cable

This usually needs a better splitter or amplifier, not a new aerial.
